Beach Sweep 2019

Beach Sweep 2019

On October 26, 2019, the Clean Ocean Action organization will host their 34th Annual Beach Sweep. A beach sweep is event that allows volunteers to comb the beaches of New Jersey from the Raritan Bay to the Delaware Bay, collect debris and record their findings. The data collected is then shared in an annual report designed to identify sources and trends in what is littering our beaches and water, and inform national, state and local efforts in reducing litter. These efforts ultimately save our oceans, beaches and marine life, that often mistakes litter for food, become entangled in items such as fishing lines and trash bags, or ingest harmful items that lead to their death.

Beach Sweep events are hosted twice a year, in April and October. The sweeps begin in each location at 9:00 am and conclude at 12:30 pm, however, volunteers may continue to sweep later if they so desire. To get involved, volunteers are asked to select a location and register online through the Clean Ocean Action website. Each cleanup location is under the direction of a volunteer Beach Captain who is in charge of the cleanup activities at their site. Each volunteer will be provided with a black bag for garbage, a white bag for recycling, and a data card to use during the cleanup. When debris is collected, volunteers must describe what was collected and where it was found on the data card which is later entered into the database. Volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes, dress according to the weather and bring along gloves. While online registration is encouraged it is not required. Volunteers may report to the location site and register onsite on the day of the event, which is held rain or shine.

Below are the locations for the south Jersey beach sweeps. Note that Sea Isle City will do their sweep on October 12, but the rest of these locations will all occur on October 26.
