History / Museums

Stone Harbor Museum
The Stone Harbor Museum is housed in its new location at 9410 Second Avenue. The museum features 50,000 artifacts, photos and displays depicting Stone Harbor’s rich history. A summer series of educational programming is held each year and presentations on specific historical events are given throughout the year. A fall and winter schedule of events is also available. The museum is free and open to the public.

Cape May County Library – 9516 Second Avenue
The Cape May County Library system operates 8 branch libraries and a book mobile service with stops throughout the county every Thursday and Friday. The library offers DVD and video game rentals, internet access, desktop computers, printing services and programming for children, teens and adults.

Free Little Libraries – 317 110th Street and 275 93rd Street
Free little libraries are free-standing boxes that neighbors put in their yard and stock with books. The books are free for the taking, as long as you return the book or replace it with another. Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary – Located between Second and Third Avenues, and 111th and 116th Streets, Stone Harbor
The Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary offers four walking trails open year-round to allow visitors to learn about and observe the various species of birds who life in and around this area. The three trails are the Heron Overlook Path, the Meadow Walk Path, the Holly Path and the Egret Epsy Path.

The Wetlands Institute – 1075 Stone Harbor Boulevard, Stone Harbor
The Wetlands Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the wetlands and coastal ecosystems of the South Jersey shore. The Institute accomplishes its mission through research, education and conservation efforts. It also provides fun, hands-on and interactive experiences for visitors to learn about our coastal environment and its wildlife and a desire to become protectors of this important ecosystem. The summer schedule is full of weekly events and festivals. You can also work with the Institute on preservation efforts for turtles, horseshoe crabs and shore birds.

Shopping

Stone Harbor is one of the quintessential shopping destinations for visitors to the southern Jersey coast. On any given day in high season, you will find scores of vacationers strolling along the 96th Street Shopping District, which is on the main drag into Stone Harbor from the mainland. It is also a favorite destination on rainy vacation days. Here you will find upscale clothing and jewelry boutiques, gift and gourmet shops, a fabulous hardware store that carries beach supplies, home décor and everything (including the kitchen sink), as well as the southern region’s only remaining movie cinema, the Harbor Theatre. Scattered among these unique shops are fabulous restaurants and bars, as well as the Reeds at Shelter Haven boutique hotel which features three restaurants, two of which are waterfront on the bay.

The 82nd Street Recreation Complex includes basketball courts, tennis courts, pickleball courts, soccer and softball fields and a playground; 96th Street Facilities include basketball, shuffleboard and tennis courts; and Chelsea Place Park (105th-106th Streets, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues) has volleyball and bocce courts, a walking trail and adult fitness equipment.
