Wildwood Attractions

Boardwalk

The Wildwood Boardwalk extends 38 blocks from 16th Avenue in North Wildwood to Cresses Avenue in Wildwood Crest. The boardwalk is 2 miles long. It includes 3 amusement piers, 3 beachfront waterparks, and hundreds of shops and restaurants. The 3 amusement piers and 2 of the water parks are all owned by the Morey family. Since 1969, the Morey family has owned amusement rides in Wildwood and today the parks are run by second generation brothers. The three piers consist of Surfside Pier, Mariner’s Landing and Adventure Pier. Surfside Pier is located at 25th Street in North Wildwood. It was the first of the three piers to be built by the Morey family. It opened in 1969 with a giant fiberglass slide that, at the time, cost 25 cents to ride. Today, Surfside Pier offers a variety of kiddie and thrill rides. Ocean Oasis Waterpark and Beach Club is located off Surfside Pier on the beach. Mariner’s Landing is located at Schellenger Avenue in Wildwood. It offers classic amusement park rides including the Giant Wheel. It also includes the Raging Waters Waterpark on the beach behind the pier. Adventure Pier is located at Spencer Avenue and features many extreme rides.

History / Museums

The Doo Wop Experience Museum
The Doo Wop Experience Museum and Neon Sign Garden celebrates the architecture, design, music, pop culture and all that made Wildwood famous in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Learn about the music of the 50’s and 60’s, and the artists who helped put Wildwood on the musical history map. You can view the period pieces from Wildwood’s famous motels and take a tour to view the historical hot spots including the neon signs of the doo-wop times. All of this is the result of the hard restorative work of the The Doo Wop Preservation League, a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster awareness, appreciation and preservation of the popular culture and imagery of the 1950s and 1960s in Wildwood.

Forgotten Warriors Vietnam Museum
The Forgotten Warriors Vietnam Museum is dedicated to preserving and exhibiting memorabilia from Vietnam War veterans. Therefore, it allows people to reflect on the cultural and military importance of the war. The museum collection began by Tom Collins, who was working at the Naval Air Station Wildwood. Collins was looking for a way to showcase his personal memorabilia from his time in Vietnam, serving as an 18-year-old helicopter door gunner from 1967 to 1968. As word about his collection spread, Vietnam veterans began donating items and the collection grew. Today, the collection includes over 1,000 artifacts, mementos and photographic material. The Museum is located at 500-598 Essex Rd, Rio Grande across from the Naval Air Station.

George F. Boyer Wildwood Historical Museum
Wildwood’s Historical Museum opened in 1963 as the result of the efforts of George F. Boyer to gather and preserve Wildwood’s history. Boyer was an enthusiastic collector of Wildwood historical artifacts and information. He was appointed to Wildwood’s first historical commission and became the first president of the Wildwood Historical Society. Today, the museum is housed at 3907 Pacific Avenue and holds the many artifacts, maps, documents and other memorabilia collected by Boyer and beyond. The museum highlights Wildwood’s unique history with the doo wop musical scene of the 50s and 60s. It is free and open to the public between May and October but is closed in winter.

Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum
Naval Air Station Wildwood (NASW) Aviation Museum is a non-profit museum located at the Cape May Airport. The Naval Air Station was commissioned in April 1943 to serve as an active dive-bomber squadron training facility during World War II. Today, Hangar #1 has been restored and transformed into an Aviation Museum containing aircraft, engines, special exhibits, and educational interactive displays.

Lighthouse

Hereford Inlet Lighthouse – 111 N Central Avenue, North Wildwood
The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse is one of the most unique lighthouses of the South Jersey shore. The lighthouse is on the south side of the Hereford Inlet, which leads from the Atlantic Ocean to the Intra-Coastal Waterway. Strong currents and shifting sandbars caused frequent shipwrecks and groundings as boats attempted to enter the inlet. As a result, in 1874 a new lighthouse was built on a dune area overlooking the approach to the inlet on the then-uninhabited barrier island. Today, the museum is no longer open to the public and the artifacts have been donated to other lighthouse organizations. The Hereford Lighthouse still stands and can be viewed by the outside. It is listed on both the National and State Registers of Historic Places and is part of the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail.

Mini-Golf

Dragon’s Lair Mini Golf – 3616 Boardwalk
This place is ultra-cool, literally. It is indoors, air-conditioned, and glows with black lights throughout.

Island Miniature Golf – 4501 New Jersey Avenue
This is one of the Wildwoods largest mini-golf courses, complete with a rock-climbing wall, batting cages and an ice cream/frozen yogurt shop.

Starlux Mini Golf – 4800 Ocean Avenue (across from the Wildwood sign)
This mini golf complex offers 3 courses. It is dog-friendly, offers 2 hours of free parking, and is available for children’s parties.

There are many other mini golf courses throughout Wildwood, but these are some of the favorites.

Nature / Wildlife

Cape May National Wildlife Refuge – 12001 Pacific Ave, Wildwood Crest
The Cape May National Wildlife Refuge is located within the Cape May peninsula. This location offers stunning views of sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean, and sunset over the water of the Delaware Bay.  The Refuge currently protects over 11,000 acres of peninsula habitat in its 3 refuge units. These units represent unique, diverse habitats: forested hardwood swamp, river estuary and ocean barrier island. There are activities for the whole family year-round at Cape May National Wildlife Refuge. These include trails, fishing, environmental education, guided walks, wildlife viewing and more.

Shopping

The Wildwoods are expansive, and so are their shopping opportunities. First stop is the famous Boardwalk, where tee shirt and gift shops, beach supply stories and other novelties can be found. Downtown Wildwood also has shops along the main drags including Rio Grande Avenue, Pacific Avenue and Atlantic Avenue. While Wildwood is an excellent destination for vacationers seeking free beaches, Boardwalk amusements and exciting nightlife, it is not specifically known for its shopping opportunities. That doesn’t mean you can’t find great shops here – you can – but not necessarily the type of shopping/dining experience you can find in other towns along the coast. If you are looking to do some serious or upscale shopping in a more defined shopping district, head north to Stone Harbor or south to Cape May.
