A barrier island known as “Five Mile Island” is the home to five municipalities: the City of Wildwood, North Wildwood, West Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Diamond Beach. This region is considered the “Doo Wop Capital of the World”. During the 1950s, over 200 motels were built to attract vacationers. Today, much of that mid-century architecture remains, along with a Doo Wop Museum.
The beaches here are the widest and most expansive on the Atlantic coast, with beach taxis that are available to transport beach-goers to the waterfront. This area is also famous for its 38 block-long boardwalk boasting of over 100 rides, water parks, shops and restaurants.
